Water Face Lift

Question:

How do I NOT gulp in water while freestyle swimming? I've been trying to pick up swimming, and the one difficulty I've been having is doing freestyle. It is difficult for me because when I turn my head to take a big breath, water comes down from my hair and my face into my mouth as I'm trying to breathe. I've tried to make sure that I don't lift my head up, and instead simply turn it, but that isn't doing me any good. I've tried making my lips stick out and also sucked in, but either way has the same result. So yes, how do I NOT breathe in water every time I try to take a breathe while freestyle swimming?

Answer:

his is why instructors teach "bobs" in the very first level. Deep breath, go under, breath out. Repeat. When you're swimming, take a breath when the arm comes out, exhale as you put your face in. You should still be exhaling, a little, when your face comes back up....use this opportunity to blow the last bit (clearing your mouth), take a breath and repeat. And wear a swimcap, or a ponytail, to help that. And...roll a little more to your side when the arm comes out. Are you doing bilateral breathing (both sides?) or just one the one? I find breathing on the one side is too often, so I tried bilateral and on every third pull, I would roll to take a breath. This would give me ample time to exhale fully before inhaling
