Kitchen Facelift

Question:

I want to "update" my kitchen a little for about $500!!!! Kitchen is about 30 years old. I have found a decent countertop at Home Depot for $60. I am very happy! The kitchen cabinets doors are big, flat, and square and made out of plywood. They have 6 coats of paint on them. Does anyone have any ideas for trimming the doors to give them some depth? Is stripping the only way to go at this point? Also, the previous owners stucco-ed the walls. I was thinking about trying the "heavy" wall paper that is specially designed to go over stucco. Has anyone over had experience with this?

Answer:

You can add surface trim. Stripping the doors would be a nice touch and there are places that will do the whole lot of them in a vat. Or, you could check with a cabinet shop on the cost of making new doors in a style you like and providing them unfinished. You could skim coat the walls with joint compound. It the texture is too rough, you will have to knock it down some and skim it some. If the walls are not too textured, liner paper can be installed prior the wallpaper. There are also "plaster on a roll" papers that can be papered over or painted.
