Randy Jackson, Al Roker, Carnie Wilson; they have all had gastric by
pass surgery and yet they are all overweight now. They started looking
thinner for a while and then just seemed to gain it back. Roker is
maybe not as big as he was pre-surgery but to me Randy Jackson looks
the same as he did before. Why would they go through the trauma and
risk of surgery just to sabatoge the whole effort?
Answer:
I asked that of my cousin who has had the surgery. She said that she feels
hungry all the time -- even with the band on her stomach. (Feels hungry as
opposed not desires a certain taste or just wants to snack for comfort. I
questioned that closely.) I suspect that folks who feel that way have some
sort of hard-wiring issue with what is in their stomach and what their
brain is telling them. And if they feel hungry and there's food around, I
suppose it must be awfully hard not to eat. Eventually the stomach
stretches and they are back where they started.
The surgery may be a life-saver in some circumstances but mostly it seems
like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound -- it just doesn't address the
REAL problem.
