Costs Of Eyelid Surgery

Question:

Should I get plastic surgery to remove saggy upper eyelids? How much does it cost? In my fifties. can anyone in the group tell me please?

Answer:

I am a plastic surgeon in Houston and would agree with the above poster to have a visual field exam by an ophthalmologist. A lax upper lid can significantly interfere with your vision and insurance usually covers the repair. I cannot tell you how happy my patients are after having that skin removed and state how much more of the world they can see. The first week or so they resort to sunglasses not just because of the postoperative bruising, but because they are not used to so much light coming into their eyes. Some patients also need a brow lift to lift the skin and soft tissue from the more lateral portions of their orbits. If you do not have a documented visual field defect, costs of the surgery vary widely depending on your location. I recommend having several consultations and checking on your plastic surgeons credentials not only at your state medical board website, but see if they are a member of the American Board of Plastic Surgery (www.surgery.org). There are many "facial plastic surgeons" and "oculoplastic surgeons" out there they are quite good, but many are really just ophthalmologists and ENT doctors who have decided to be cosmetic surgeons and have not had the training and testing necessary to call themselves a board certified plastic surgeon.
