Chemical Peel
|
Question: Is there a certain age you have to be to get a chemical peel?
Do you have to be above a certain age to get something like a chemical peel or laser on your skin?
Answer: I'm not sure if dermatologists would refuse a potential patient of a certain age for a chemical peel consultation, but I'm sure that you would at least have to get a parent's consent if under 18 years of age just as getting something much more simple like an ear piercing would require parental consent.
There is a website that talks about different cosmetic procedures including chemical peels and laser and it has a message board for basically each type of procedure with laypeople like you and myself being able to post after registering for free. It is chockful of informative posts just reading from other former patients and actually some were really upset with the results of the laser as it gave them even more hyperpigmentation and such.
And just a word to the wise, there are a lot of posts in the 'chemical peels' section that talk about the person having purchased tca (chemical used in medium depth peel) from online and then diluting it and doing it themselves, however, please do Not do this as I, myself, am saving up for the derm to do the peel on me. There is way too much risk for burns, scarring and permanent injury if doing the chemical peel as an amateur with no medical training like myself. (I'm going to be 35 next month and have hyperpigmentation and some loss of elasticity from laying out in the sun without proper sunblock in my earlier years :)
And just fyi, I read in a book the other day written by an M.D. (medical doctor) that obagi blue peels (tca mixed with a blue substance which is supposed to allow the dr more control over the depth of the peel) are Not supposed to be as effective as the tca peel alone and the author (M.D.) said that the blue peel was rather 'gimmicky' without saying that directly to the dr
